Bangladesh gained independence in 1971 through a bloodstained war and a cost of millions of lives. She had to pay a formidable price for attaining liberty from the centuries of colonial occupation. Mindless atrocities during the liberation war by the occupied forces ravaged the country into ruin. Consequently, the very first decade after independence Bangladesh had to confront many difficulties. In that gloomy time, scores of NGOs were emerged with certain missions of poverty alleviation, social welfare, and overall development of the country and ASA was one of them.

ASA was established in 1978 by late Md. Shafiqual Haque Choudhury, a well-educated and visionary man and committed to the country’s development, especially welfare for the poor. Since inception, ASA undertook and implemented various programs meant for improving the living standard of the poor and transforming society prosperous.

ASA introduced innovative microfinance program in 1991 that brought revolutionary change in this sector. For some unique features ASA microfinance program achieved unprecedented success and fame. Simplicity, fast scale, and cost efficiency etc. traits of its microfinance model helped ASA to become one of the largest MFIs of the world. Globally famed Forbes magazine of the USA chose ASA as the top MFI of in world in 2007.

Currently, ASA serves 7.2 million clients of Bangladesh with microfinance and some nonfinancial services to contain poverty and vulnerability of the underprivileged segment. Moreover, it is also extending technical assistance service to 13 countries in Asia and Africa in expanding the web of financial inclusion is considered the most effective weapon to combat poverty.
